Life in the Bike Lane
Published in Paperback by Double SS Press (10 May, 2000)
Author: Gina Tiano
Average review score:

Tour de Life
Gina Tiano has creatively captured the essence of life's little quirks. Each short tale provides us with a cheerful perspective by painting the lighter side of those potentially difficult and sticky situations we all face daily. Our family loves the book and looks forward to future publications.

funny stuff
I have been reading Gina's column for two years now and she
never ceases to make me laugh.. She is an extremely witty funny
lady. I often wonder why she is not writing for television, or
maybe she already is.

This book is hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you are depressed and out of it, before you reach for your prozac , reach for this book..it will definitely liven up your spirits
and it costs a lot less than a therapist visit and medication!!
.

Uplifting
This is a great book to give as a gift, especially for someone who is ill or down and out.
The stories deal with everyday life, but focus on the good, humorous side of life, allowing readers to refocus and see the good in their own lives.
This book is entertaining for both young and old.

What Mama Couldn't Tell Us About Love: Healing the Emotional Legacy of Slavery, Celebrating Our Light
Published in Hardcover by DIANE Publishing Co (February, 1999)
Authors: Brenda Lane Richardson and Brenda Wade
Average review score:

I don't rate many things with 5 stars!
I really can't add nothing that hasn't been said but this book is
damn near perfect! Any black Women who reads this will find something here to identify with. A great gift to give to your Mothers, Daughter, Sisters, cousins, friend etc.

Understanding yourself in a new light
I have never read a book that revealed more about black male female relationships. I've read this book three times, and I've given as a gift to other sisters in the struggle just as many times. I recommend this book highly to anyone on a search to understand themselves intergenerationally.

Provocative, Enlightening, and Engaging
This book is an absolute MUST for any black woman (or man for that matter) who wants to deal with intergenerational scarcity beliefs which prevent us from truly experiencing love in our lives. Richardson and Wade do an excellent job of explaining how the slavery experience impacted every facet of black life and remnants of that impact are played out in our relationships with our family, friends, and mates. For instance, many of us can look back in our family tree to locate where different behavioral patterns (i.e. alcoholism, sexual abuse, obesity, etc.) developed and now play out in our own lives. The authors have you do a series of exercises, such as a genogram which lists the scarcity beliefs and self-destructive behaviors members of our families have developed and passed on to us, to help you begin to understand those internalized beliefs and behaviors which prevent us from experiencing real love. The book doesn't just focus on love relationships with mates but explores love relationships with ourselves, our family, and our mates. Personally, I found the chapter on anger to be the most provocative and enlightening. So much so that I have begun using the information I learned about my anger issues in my individual counseling sessions. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to deal with the pain of slavery and its reprecussions on our present day lives.

100 Proof: Tips and Tales for Spirited Drinkers Everywhere
Published in Paperback by Plume (01 August, 2000)
Authors: P. T. Elliott, Adam Lane, and Adam Lane
Average review score:

seriously killer
This book rocks. It tells you everything you need to know about booze and it's totally hilarious. There's even a 'nutrition' guide, insane blue laws and a great story about JFK boozing it up in the oval office. I'm giving it to all my friends this Christmas.

Boost your spirits
100 Proof celebrates the joy of drinking. I work in a liquor store in PA, where customers bombard me with questions about wine and spirits everyday. This book taught me a few things that I never knew. 100 Proof is filled with fun facts from where the Star Spangled Banner was really derived from to what Christian Slater's BAC was when he was arrested. I found this book very informational and extremely entertaining at the same time. My attention was turned to this book from the magazine Maxim, and I thought, well, if it's in Maxim, it must be good. I'm extremely happy with my purchase with this book, and with Amazon.com, I didn't need to make a trip to the store looking through aisles to find it. I definately would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys having just a drink after dinner to someone that parties hard all night long.

A MUST READ!
This book is hysterical and full of juicy tidbits of drinking lore. Every drunk should own it!

Guaranteed Income for Life: How Variable Annuities can Cut Your Taxes, Pay You Every Year of Your Life, and Bring You Financial Peace of Mind
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 August, 1998)
Author: Michael F. Lane
Average review score:

An excellent guide to investing and how the annuity fits in.
With all the controversies of variable annuities today, Michael does an excellent job of showing the appropriateness of the annuity. The book was written at the basic level for the investor, capturing an informative overview of the many different investment options such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds and how the annuity fits into the investor's overall investment strategy. I would highly recommend this book to all investors!

Excellent book...
I've read many different points of view about the value of VAs -- this book explains them clearly. Lane's book shows how tax deferral wroks. He takes you step-by-step so you can see how all the parts relate and why. Read chapters 5 "Suitable Uses of VAs" and ch 18 "Analyzing the Payout" and you will know more than most advisors. Great book congrads.

A great guide for financial planners and end consumers.
Having been in this business for 5 years it's nice to find a refreshing look at the real uses of variable annuities and when they make the most sense. Michael is very enlightening in his approach to when a variable annuity makes sense and for whom. He also is very concise in his description of all the factors which contribute to determining the above. In an industry which is muddled with both the pros and cons of variable annuities this book is a straight shot to doing what is in the best interest of the client.

Mad Monks' Guide to New York CD-ROM
Published in CD-ROM by Monk Media (11 June, 1999)
Authors: Michael Lane and James Crotty
Average review score:

CD Rom version is the best!
Funny, irreverant and witty ....took me to places I never would have discovered . . . .what a mind expanding trip without drugs! BRAVO.

GENIUS, GENIUS, GENIUS!
Here I am, spitting and cussing and followed by my tribe of beautiful wife, giggling baby, manic dog, neurotic cat, tiny overpriced one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan, thirty-two South Bronx homeroom students, anti-situationist buddies in the Yale Art History Graduate School, coffee shop aficionados, strange relatives, no money, one as yet unfinished great American novel, an entire collection of badly washed decaying old college clothes, and, last but not least, one pristine, mint, delectable copy of "The Mad Monks' Guide to New York City." Genius! Genius! Genius!

But who are these morons who keep giving the Monks the cliched comparisons to Kerouac and Kuralt? Where are the comparisons to the greats? As convoluted, descriptive, and gratuitous as a Faulkner sentence! As minutely involved as Wolf! As sharp and evocative as Hemmingway! As full of life and extraterrestialy wise as Salinger! As innovatively plotted as Joyce! As romantic as Austin! As poetic and erotic as Shakespeare!

Captures "the soul of the city"
The Mad Monks' Guide to New York City avoids dwelling on well-worn landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty, focusing more on the eccentric and offbeat, such as Miss Vera's Finishing School for Boys Who Want to Be Girls, Fly Fishing in Central and even Toxic Tourism like Staten Island's Fresh Kills Dump, the world's largest dump/landfill.

Along with the sublime and the bizarre is a cornucopia of the great city's diverse culture, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spots, making it probably as useful for those who live in the city as for those planning to visit it.

Old Home Town
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (November, 1985)
Author: Rose Wilder Lane
Average review score:

Excellent
Rose is just as gripping a writer as her mother, although with a far more adult narrative style.

A simply wonderful book
I bought my copy at the museum in Mansfield because I always wanted to read Rose's work. This book is a gem. The essay introducing the book is worth getting the book but each story is a gem on its own. Her voice is fresh and rings well today. You would not know she lived in the first half of the 20th century.

I have loaned this book out to 2 people now and all of us are knocked out at how good Rose was. Purchase it, read it. Rose was well known in the early part of last century for good reason. Let's bring this author back to the audience she richly deserves today.

A wonderful book
This book was so good that I haven't been able to pick up another book in over a month.

Max's Dragon Shirt
Published in Hardcover by Dial Books for Young Readers (May, 1991)
Authors: Rosemary Wells and Robin Lane Fox
Average review score:

Great children's book with a few minor flaws...
Rosemary Wells is a gifted writer and illustrator. The story is engaging and the illustrations add to the personality of the characters. With that said, there are a couple of things that prevent me from giving this book a perfect review. The first thing is the stereotype of the younger sister. Must all younger sisters be shallow, mall dwelling half-wits? The second thing is the part of the story where Max gets lost in the store. This may frighten younger readers.

Another winner with Max and Ruby!
I have adored the "Max" series by Rosemary Wells for quite sometime, as my three children absolutely loved all the Max books when they were younger. Ms. Wells manages to capture really great nuances on the faces of both Max and his sister Ruby, as well as presenting the most humorous situations for Max and Ruby.

Max wants nothing but a dragon shirt and Ruby is insisting on buying him a much-needed pair of pants, per the instructions of their mother. Max does not give up on his beloved dragon shirt and reminds Ruby every chance he gets. Ruby gets sidetracked in the store trying on dresses and Max manages to wander in the store after dozing off and not finding Ruby in the dressing room. Max finds his coveted dragon shirt, puts it on and is "found" by two policemen in the store. Well, now the dragon shirt is covered with yummy ice cream and Ruby has no choice but to purchase the shirt for Max!

The illustrations and use of color will delight any youngster, as will the antics of Ruby and Max! I love their facial expressions and even after all of these years, I still love reading these books! This was one series of book that neither I, nor my children, ever tired of reading. I find the Max and Ruby books just really classic books! My children would read them over and over again and would find them first with every library visit!

Absolutely pure delight!!!

Max Prevails Again!
Another winner in Rosemary Wells' slyly hilarious "Max" series, this time Max and his older sister Ruby have just $5 to replace his "disgusting" pants. Max has his eyes set on a "dragon shirt," but Ruby has to get those pants.

Their ensuing misadventures in a department store take the bunny pair from "Large Appliances" to "Boy's Sportswear" (a caution: Max is momentarily lost in the store, this may or may not be frightening to your little one). With big colorful illustrations by Wells and a happy ending (well, for Max!), this is a fun story of siblings on the loose. 22 pages, with watercolor/pen and ink pictures on each page.

101 Ways to Help Your Daughter Love Her Body

Buy this book if you have a daughter!

Starting from babies and moving through each stage of a girl's life, this book gives sound, quick advice in a very easy to read format to help girls love their bodies. There is also a great section for Dads too. If you have a daugher. Get this book. It is a must read.

A friend...
This Author is Fantastic and an inspration to us all as mothers and as women!

A TREMENDOUS BOOK FOR BOOSTING SELF-ESTEEM!
Few parents with teen-aged daughters escape the frustrations of dealing, at least on occasion, with a daughter who feels she should look like the image on a fashion magazine. At this trying point in a girl's life, a great many insecurities can arise ranging from peer pressure to lack of confidence and self-esteem about appearance. Through the media, i.e. television, movies and fashion magazines, teens are often programmed to think only thin is acceptable and unless we have a the face and body of a fashion model, we will never be accepted and never be noticed.

This book is an excellent source for working with your daughter to help her understand that true beauty lies within, not on the surface. Each of us has our own unique beauty and style and rather than try to cultivate what others have achieved, we should be individualistic and cultivate what we have been given. This is a book where Mom's and Dad's can both play an active role in dealing with the often frustrating day-to-day problems of a teen-aged daughter, and by doing so, helping her feel more confident, happy and healthy, both emotionally and physically.
